Online dating - A modern version of the Mystery Date Game

Do you remember the old Mystery Date game? When I first saw the movie "The Santa Clause" I couldn't help but smile as the mom in the movie shared her story of wanting one of these coveted games.  My sister and I used to play it quite a bit - I'm not entirely sure if I remember all the rules, but basically I think you were looking for the perfect guy, and on your turn you would get to open the door and reveal the person there until you found your perfect match to win the game.  Now I find it extremely funny and a bit disturbing that this game was so popular with young girls.  It had some pretty awful messages (like losing your turn and being disappointed if you got the nerd date; somehow I don't think Melinda Gates thinks that same way).  There are many people who are still playing a real life version of this game, but just like the Mystery Date Game, opening that door is the only way to find your perfect date.
Have you noticed there are a ton of ads promoting online dating services lately.  The online dating companies are trying to cash in on all those new year's resolutions to find love, and according to experts online dating sites see a huge traffic increase between Christmas and Valentine’s Day.  Over 200 million internet users visit an online dating site each month - so there is a lot of interest.

It can be scary to jump back into the dating world after a divorce or death of a spouse, but it can also be wonderful and change your life.  In a previous post, I shared my story about online dating and finding the man of my dreams (http://lookingonthesunnyside.blogspot.com/2014/03/yes-you-can-find-love-online.html).

If you still aren't convinced, I want to share some important facts about online dating from the PEW research center (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/02/13/5-facts-about-online-dating/)
1Online dating has lost much of its stigma. A majority of Americans now say online dating is a good way to meet people, when that hasn’t always been the case
2One-in-five adults ages 25-34 years old have used online dating, but it’s also popular with older singles, too.
3One-third of people who have used online dating have never actually gone on a date with someone they met on these sites.
4One-in-five online daters have asked someone else to help them with their profile.
55% of Americans who are in a marriage or committed relationship say they met their significant other online.

The big question if you are single is - Should you try one of these dating sites, and my answer is a resounding YES!  Be brave, open the mystery door because it could lead to finding the love of your life.
